Obituary for Gordon Young

Gordon Young
Young, Gordon
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father and grandfather, Gordon William Young, at the Listowel Hospital on Thursday September 13th, 2018 after an unexpected illness.
Gordon was born on July 8, 1938 at the Young Family farm on the 14th Concession of Logan Township to the late Charles and Ruby (Osborn) Young. In 1969, he married Helen (Marran) in St. Mary’s, Ontario and they had two daughters; Lauri (Blair) Leduc of Hamilton and Lisa (Jason) Harris of Burlington. Gordon was the dear Papa of Reilly Leduc and Richard and Rachel Harris.
Gordon is also survived by his brother Alfred (Verna) Young of Mitchell, sister-in-law Myrna Marran of Smith’s Falls and brothers-in-law Ken Marran and Harry (Vivian) Marran of Alberta. Gordon leaves behind several nieces and nephews including Bill (Cheryl) Young of Monkton who, in addition to be loving and supporting, generously helped him with yard work and maintenance so that he could remain in his home.
Gordon is predeceased by his brother-in-law Sam Marran and sisters-in-law Irene Marran and Gloria Marran.
Gordon was the proud owner and operator of Youngholm Farms in Logan Township where he and Helen milked Jersey cows until their move to Monkton in 1979. Gordon worked for the Perth County School Board for the rest of his career, first as a lawn maintenance man and later as a custodian at various elementary and secondary schools across the county.
Gordon strongly believed in giving back to his community and he fulfilled this belief in many different capacities. He was a Councillor for the Township of Logan in the early 1980s and later a Councillor for the Municipality of West Perth. He was a charter member of the Monkton Optimist Club and served on the Board of Directors of the Galbraith Optimist Camp for Kids. Gordon was also a member of the former Monkton Independent Order of the Oddfellow Lodge and he also belonged to various groups such as the Farm Safety Association, the Perth-Huron Jersey Club, the Perth County Soil and Crop Association and the Perth County Milk Producers. He was a former 4H Club leader and a proud Perth County Junior Farmer member. He was a long-time member of the former St. Brigid’s Roman Catholic Church in Kennicott and he later belonged to St. Vincent de Paul Church in Mitchell.
Gordon was an avid follower of news and current events and would often buy a newspaper in every community that he travelled to. He loved word search puzzles, collecting toy tractors and black licorice.
For the last 10 years of his life, Gordon battled Parkinson’s Disease with dignity, grace and determination. And with the help of his beloved wife Helen, he was able to remain in his home until two weeks prior to his death.
Friends and family will be received on Thursday, September 20, 2018 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lockhart Funeral Home in Mitchell. Mass of the Christian burial will be held on Friday, September 21, 2018 at 11 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Mitchell with interment to follow at the church cemetery. A reception will follow at the Lockhart Reception Centre.
Memorial donations to The Listowel Memorial Hospital Foundation (Palliative Care), the Parkinson Society of Southwestern Ontario, or the charity of one’s choice would be appreciated and can be made at www.LockhartFuneralHome.com
