Ilene Elsie (Whetham) MacDonald passed away on May 30, 2019 at the age of 80 years.
Ilene was the loving mother of Shellie, Patti (Dan) and James (Tami) MacDonald, the cherished grandmother of Matthew (Tanya), Erin (James), Alex (Tallis), Sarah and Jake (Hilary) Van Stone, Kyra and Jacob Lepp and Willow MacDonald and the treasured great-grandmother to Lily, Emma and Hyland. Ilene was the dearly loved sister of Ken Whetham (Joyce) and sister-in-law of Sheila MacDonald and Don Klinkhammer along with nieces and nephews Ken, Kurt, Lynn and Brad Whetham and Steven and Susan Klinkhammer. Ilene cared deeply about her extended family including the Friends, Tyndalls, Jordisons, MacDonalds, Munros and Allisons. She shared an enduring friendship with Jim MacDonald and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Ilene graduated from London Teachers College in 1958. She later continued her education, graduating with a BA in Psychology from the University of Waterloo in 1986. In her later career, she dedicated herself to working with students with special rights in classrooms across the Waterloo County Board of Education.
Ilene spent recent years living in British Columbia with her daughter Shellie and in close proximity to her son James and many of her grand and great-grandchildren. She maintained an everlasting love for her family and friends in Ontario and the sunsets at the family cottage in Kintail.
A celebration of Ilene’s life will be held from 1:00-3:00 pm on Saturday, August 24, 2019 at the covered pavilion in Mitchell Lion’s Park. Acknowledgements will begin at 1:45 pm. at the Mitchell Lion’s Park, Bleimheim St. and Huron Rd (Hwy 8), Mitchell, Ontario.
Ilene was a tireless advocate for education. Donations in her name will be used to create a library of resources for people and families living with dementia and will include books for both adults and children.
